Rain Ride

One of my friends Putt had a bike accident yesterday. He and his room-mate Moda, were coming towards the college when a KSRTC bus clashed with their Bullet. The bus conductor was of the opinion that the bike was overtaking an auto rickshaw and the bus had somehow swerved to avoid a rock or a gutter…

Putt was messed up pretty bad. He needed two operations yesterday. He had to be shifted to a super specialty hospital for the second one. I believe that the best treatment possible was provided to the duo. He has to be ok in some time, once the bones heal. Moda had a fractured thigh bone. He too is ok now.

Putt is a careful rider. He doesn’t take any chances on the road, from what I’ve seen of his riding. Given the chances that I take everyday, it is statistically predictable that I too might meet with a similar shunt one day. I was riding really slowly and careful all day today. To tell the truth, I was scared.

The weather here in Trivandrum is really hot nowadays. The summer is yet to peak and the mercury keeps on rising everyday. There was a summer shower today, as I was leaving college today. I got totally drenched.

My glasses were all steamy and wet, and could hardly see what was in front of me. Still I went on at a slow pace. I looked like a Neanderthal then, I suppose. I had a grimace on my face and my eyes were almost closed – a compromise between shutting out the stinging bullets of water and maintaining necessary vision.

I don’t usually fancy rains. Maybe it is that, I’ve had too many bad experiences to relate with rains. People usually like rains. Sometimes, just to look at the heavens opening their lachrymal glands, and wonder at this world that we live in. My grimace was increasing at a steady pace as the odometer counted on. My mind was also in a tunnel vision. It had the stinging rain and the traffic to cope with. All I saw was the yellow rear end of the lorry which was chugging in front of me. I was trailing it, trying to avoid direct blast of rain.

Here I was, wet to the core, rain stinging my skin, and very irritated. Suddenly, a scene from The Zahir rose up in my mind. A scene where the author undergoes a ritual initiation act; one in which he has to shed off his clothes and brave the cold wind of the Steppes. The author shivers, as the cold wind lashes his bare skin. Mikhail, his companion tells him to stop resisting the cold. Accept it. Stop fighting it…Suddenly the cold lost its overpowering sway, says the author. I decided to try that.

I accepted the bite of the rain drops. The world in front of me changed to a beautiful place. It was almost a continued sequence of moments of clarity as I kept riding in the rain. I had started enjoying it. There was a wide grin pasted on my face as it got whipped by the rain drops coming at different angles as I followed the wet road and its twists and turns. The wind was like a symphony conductor, guiding the rain drops’ trajectories to perfection, or imperfection. Nothing’s perfect they say. But, sometimes we feel that nothing’s imperfect. Crafted to perfection, even though it might appear as not. That ride was something to remember, even though I still don’t like rains.

Danny Vinyard -
My conclusion is, hate is baggage.
Life's too short to be pissed off all the time.
Its just not worth it

Visions

The eye never disappears. It is always there. In its socket, right at the bottom of the door. The decaying wood forms a reluctant home to this emotionless monster. Its white is crisscrossed with throbbing rivulets of purple. That gives it a sinister look, I suppose. But if one looks into the eye, it is devoid of anything other than an insatiable curiosity. Its gaze follows me as I move around. I don’t like this feeling.

One night has passed. The eye is still at its job. Its eyelids untiring. I just noticed that its eyelids lacked lashes. I thought it to be peculiar. Why does it have any eyelids at all? It never blinks. I still didn’t give a damn. It continued its curious perch in the bottom frame of the door.

I can’t take it any more. I am going to kill the eye. I abused it verbally; it stared at me unflinching. I threw sand at it; it still mocked me. I thrust a rusty knife into it; the jelly oozed out of the wound, but it was mocking me still. Quite an iron will, it has.

Why the hell is the world going dark? Why are the lights flickering? Is it the dawn of the apocalypse? Probably not. I must be imagining things. Nothing is real, I say to myself quite often. Everything is a figment of my imagination. The eye refuses to vanish even though I command it. Hmm. I guess I am powerless over my imagination. It seems to have a will of its own.

Sadness is an animal emotion. It is sprinkled all over my dreams. I wake up feeling the weight of the world on my shoulders. But why? Why should I feel responsible for anything. I can’t even be responsible for myself, technically. Because of reductionism. The chat bot tells me that “Reductionism is the philosophy that all psychology reduces to biology, all biology to chemistry, chemistry to physics, and finally physics to mathematical logic. Therefore, according to reductionism, I can understand you by means of logic alone without having a human brain.”

Everything I do is because of the activities of the small particles that comprise me. They work according to a set of laws, most of which are still unknown to us. I don’t have free will. I can’t stop the eye from its unrelenting gaze. It refuses to dislodge from its nook, come hell or high water.

I wished that a tsunami would come and wipe out the door and the eye. It came and it went. But the door stood straight mocking at me, and the eye kept staring at me.

Negotiate If You Can

Some millenia ago, if I wanted something from you I would have taken my club and bashed your head in, and try to take that thing which I needed. But you wouldn't allow me such a clean getaway. You would try to bash my brains in. That used to be precursor of negotiation, I believe.
Nowadays, since we have all become so civilized, we try to talk over things, and arrive at a win win situation, and get along with life. Then again, we all know that you can't win them all. Life seems to be smooth for a good negotiator. Negotiation ought to become a religion or a branch of science, or simply art. Its a wonder it isn't a major religion now. Negotiations cater us in the walks of life. Negotiation should be taught as a part of life sciences at primary education levels. Its a beautiful art. One can study it all life, yet one can never truly master it. Because there might always be a better negotiator somewhere.
